Afton Smith: the book she wrote, and the credits nobody lists
Afton Smith is an American actress and author, born on 3 December 1967 in Northport, Long Island. She appeared in Less Than Zero, Fried Green Tomatoes, Reality Bites and George of the Jungle, and she has written two books.
She married Brendan Fraser in September 1998 and they divorced in 2008. That is why people search her name. It is comfortably the least interesting thing about her.

Point to Happy
This is her most substantial piece of work and most pages about her either skip it or give it a line.
How it started
Her mother, Miriam Smith, went looking for a birthday present for her grandson Griffin. She found books written for the siblings of autistic children and she found clinical books written for adults. She could not find a book made for the child himself.
Smith is a media consultant and publication designer by trade. Rather than give up and buy a toy, she recruited her two daughters: Afton, an actress and writer, and Margo Smithwick, a photographer in Vermont. The three of them spent two years making the book that did not exist.
Afton described her mother’s reasoning to a reporter in plainer terms than that. Given the kind of family they are, and given that her mother is an artist, the obvious answer was to make one.
What the book does
Point to Happy: A Book for Kids on the Autism Spectrum was published by Workman on 28 March 2011.
It is a 20-page picture book with a soft moulded hand pointer attached on a wand, safety-tested and free of PVC and phthalates. The parent reads and the child points.
- Photographs cover moods, everyday objects, activities and daily routines
- The text is deliberately short and direct
- The physical act of holding and pointing, repeated, helps a child focus
- Two blank pages at the end let families personalise it
Toni Giannone, a communication disorders specialist and founder of The Speech Academy, consulted on it. It holds a 4.6 average from Amazon reviewers.
Griffin was born in September 2002. Shortly after his second birthday his parents noticed that although he could say Mum and Dad, he was not responding to his own name. Afton has said she assumed it was a speech delay or a hearing problem. He was diagnosed on the autism spectrum. Brendan Fraser told GQ in 2018 that his son needs extra love in the world and gets it.
Both parents have spoken about this publicly and by choice. The book exists because of it.
Her acting career
Seven credits across sixteen years, and several in films people still watch.
| Year | Title | Role |
|---|---|---|
| 1987 | Less Than Zero | Kim |
| 1991 | Fried Green Tomatoes | Leona Threadgoode |
| 1994 | Reality Bites | Janine |
| 1995 | A Reason to Believe | Becky |
| 1995 | Pig Sty | Guest role |
| 1997 | George of the Jungle | Ursula’s friend |
| 2003 | Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star | Herself, uncredited |
Fried Green Tomatoes and Reality Bites are the two that matter. Both are films with long afterlives, and she is in them under her own name, years before she met Brendan Fraser.
George of the Jungle is where they met, in 1997. She played a friend of Ursula, the lead’s love interest.
Hollywood Picks the Classics
Her other book is Hollywood Picks the Classics: A Guide for the Beginner and the Aficionado, a guide to classic film aimed at both newcomers and people who already know the territory.
It gets almost no attention on any page about her, which is a shame, because two published books make “writer” a more accurate description of her than “ex-wife of.”
The divorce, and 2022, and 2025
They married on 27 September 1998 and divorced in 2008. The proceedings were reported at the time as contentious, particularly over support payments, and several pages competing for this keyword still describe the split in those terms.
Then look at the photo archives.
Brendan Fraser and Afton Smith arrived together at the Gotham Awards in New York in November 2022, during the run-up to his Oscar campaign for The Whale. They arrived together again at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival in Georgia in October 2025.
Fourteen years after the divorce, and then seventeen. Whatever happened in 2008, they have been turning up to each other’s professional milestones since, and nobody writing about her has noticed.
What isn’t verified about Afton Smith
- A real estate career. One page’s headline describes her as a real estate agent. No brokerage, licence or listing is ever named.
- A net worth. No credible figure exists.
- Her father and early family details. One page states outright that these are not known. Others describe her upbringing anyway.
- Her current residence. Greenwich, Connecticut appears in her 2011 author biography. That is fourteen years old and nothing more recent is documented.
- Details of the divorce settlement. Terms were not made public, whatever figures circulate.
- Any current acting work. Her last credit is from 2003.
One more thing worth knowing if you are searching this name. The results are heavily polluted by the Afton family from the Five Nights at Freddy’s games, and by the actress Afton Williamson. Neither has any connection to her.

final Words
The story most pages tell is a promising actress who married a movie star, had a bitter divorce, and disappeared.
The record shows something else. She was in two films people still quote before she met him. She co-wrote a book with her mother and her sister because a shop did not stock the one her son needed, and it took them two years. She wrote a second book about classic cinema. And she was standing next to her ex-husband on a red carpet in Savannah last October.
